In our community, we are fortunate to be surrounded by productive farms and ranches that make agriculture the County's largest industry.  Not only do agricultural lands contribute economically to the community, but these lands also protect watershed and habitats as well as providing the open space that defines our county's heritage and our quality of life.

The San Benito Agricultural Land Trust is devoted to providing financial options to landowners in order to protect the agricultural heritage of San Benito County.  The Trust can protect land permanently and directly by accepting donations of conservation easements designed to meet the individual needs of landowners.  As a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, the Trust is funded through membership, donations and grants.

Through collaborative partnerships with farmers, ranchers, public agencies, and local organizations, the Trust works to ensure that the county’s working landscapes remain viable for future generations. By supporting sustainable agricultural practices and encouraging responsible stewardship, the Trust helps maintain the ecological balance that depends on healthy soils, clean water, and thriving wildlife corridors.

In addition to preserving land, the Trust plays an educational role in the community. It raises awareness about the importance of farmland conservation, supports outreach programs for youth and adults, and encourages residents to recognize how deeply agriculture is woven into the cultural identity of San Benito County. These efforts strengthen the connection between the people and the land, inspiring long-term respect and care.

The Trust also focuses on building resilience against the pressures of development, climate change, and economic challenges. By offering incentives and practical tools, it empowers landowners to make informed decisions that benefit both their families and the wider community. The organization’s long-term vision is a landscape where agriculture continues to thrive while natural resources remain protected.

Some of the key goals of the Trust include:

  • Supporting voluntary conservation agreements tailored to landowner needs
  • Preserving productive farmland and ranchland for future generations
  • Promoting sustainable land management practices
  • Protecting wildlife habitat and watershed health
  • Strengthening community awareness about the value of agricultural lands

Through these ongoing efforts, the San Benito Agricultural Land Trust ensures that the county’s rural character, agricultural prosperity, and natural beauty remain intact for decades to come.
